Run a local game engine build

Point Turret at a game engine you built in a checkout, and reload it after every change without publishing.

You change the game engine in a Turret checkout and want to see the change in a Game session without publishing it.

  1. Build the engine in the checkout with pnpm engine:build. The bundle is the engines/game/dist folder.
  2. Open Settings, the General tab and the Game engine group.
  3. Type the full path of the bundle folder into Local engine folder, or press Choose… and pick it.
  4. Press Save. Turret restarts the game engine on that folder at once. The band over the game pane reads "Using the local game engine in" and the folder.
  5. Change the engine and run pnpm engine:build again.
  6. Press Restart engine, in the band or in the group. Turret reloads the folder as it is now.
  7. Open a new Game session. It lists the tools of the rebuilt engine.

While a folder is set, Turret still checks the feed and does not apply what it finds. The group says when the feed has a newer version.

A folder with no runnable bundle leaves the previous engine running. The group says why under the field, and the band reads "Could not start the local game engine". Press Restart engine to try the folder again after you fix it.

Press Clear to go back to the downloaded engine, or to the engine that came with Turret. The engine restarts at once, as it does when you save.

Running games come back where they were when the engine restarts. A game with several peers restarts at tick 0.

See Update the game engine for the feed's updates, and Settings for the Game engine group.
