Running a game

Open a Game session, install its skill, build and load an effect, and step it once.

You will have a Game session with an effect loaded, watch it advance a tick, and see the picture and the tick counter both change. It takes about five minutes, most of it spent waiting for a first build.

Before you start, you need:

  • A repository with a C++ project that declares itself an effect.
  1. Press the sidebar's New control. The New Session screen opens.
  2. Type or browse to the folder in the Working directory field. The field shows the path you chose.
  3. Press the Game mode card. The card becomes the current choice.
  4. Press Create. The screen closes and the session opens on the folder.
  5. Look at the session header, above the transcript. A Game skill missing chip is there.
  6. Press the chip, then Install skill in the note it opens. Turret writes the skill's files into the repository and the chip goes away.
  7. Press the VFX tab. It reads that no effect is loaded.
  8. Type this into the composer and send it: "Build the project and load the built binary as the effect." The session builds the project, then loads the binary. The VFX tab shows the parameters the effect declared, with the tick counter reading 0.
  9. Press Step, in the transport row beside Run and Reset. The picture updates and the tick counter rises to 1.

See Install the game-setup skill for the skill band in more depth, and Drive the VFX pane for the rest of the transport controls.
